Meeting Point has been changed.

Unfortunately, most of the Shuri castle has been burnt down in the morning of 31st October, 2019.
We have arranged an alternative site as below instead of the Shuri catsle.

YSTM2019 & REIF2019 will offer the following three excursions on 4th December 2019.

PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED (Registration period: until Oct. 30, 2019; the maximum number of participants: 25 for each tour)

Technical tour A:
The maintenance center of Japan Transocean Air (JTA)

Okinawa has of 160 islands over a vast ocean area ranging from approximately 400 km south to north and 1,000 km east to west. JTA aircrafts connecting these islands are indispensable means of transportation for the citizens. In this tour, participants visit the maintenance center in JTA including aircraft operation rooms. Participants can inspect how the overhaul of aircrafts are conducted (disassembly and/or installation of jet engines, seats, etc.). This tour will provide a new perspective to young researchers in rock engineering.

9:00 Departure from Okinawa Convention Center LAGUNA GARDEN HOTEL
10:35 JTA maintenance center
12:40 Arrival back at the Okinawa convention center

Fee: JPY 3,000 (including sandwich and water)


Technical tour B:
The Itokazu Abuchiragama (Ryukyu limestone cave)

Ryukyu limestone can be observed in Okinawa islands, and there are many “Gama” in the southern part where “Gama” means the limestone cave in Okinawa. A famous cave “Abuchiragama” is a 270 m long natural cave and was used as a fallout shelter and storage area for the citizens and Japanese army during the battle of Okinawa in 1945. In the cave now, there are concerns about the risk of roof-falls and/or wall-collapses by natural weathering. This tour will provide a new understanding of cave in Okinawa to young researchers in rock engineering.

Technical tour C:
The Nakagusuku castle and Sefa-utaki

In Okinawa there are many castles registered as world heritage. In Nakagusuku castle, participants can observe distinctive castle walls and gates where many blocks of Ryukyu limestones are stacked. Sefa-utaki is one of the world heritage site and the most sacred site of Ryukyu Kingdom, and it appears in legends about the beginning of Ryukyu. This tour will provide a new understanding of history of Okinawa to young researchers in rock engineering.
